We are goin' to get our sawmill fired back up this summer. My dad thought that it would be a good idea to put the slabs on our garden and burn them for next year's crop. I heard that ashes does something to the ph of the soil, whatdoes it do lower it or raise it? we are plannin' on puttin' lots of slabs not just a few, they will be 2-4 foot deep across our whole garden. Do yall think that this is a good idea? It sounds good to me put i just wanted yall's opinion as well.
Thanks in adv. Justin

Bob,
Wood ash will raise your Ph, but you don't want to add too much. Too much will make your soil "mucky".

I can only speak about what I've seen after forest fires. In places where there are burnt stumps and logs left, regeneration is rich and strong. In places where the fire has been very hot nothing grows for a couple of years. So don't burn to hot! I think the intense heat kills off too many of the microganisms in the soil. Good luck.
