GERRY GADBERRY UPDATE ON 7-16-2001: {WASHINGTON}
The clone is the by far largest in my three plant patch. It currently covers an area of 36' X 20' . I have leaves that are averaging 22" across. I have set 15 solid pumpkins two on the main vine 17' and 19'. The 17' specimen "self hand pollinated" on June 28 is slightly larger than a basketball and has 4 lobes, is bright yellow, with a fat, average length stem 5" or so. the 19' specimen "self hand pollinated" on July 5 is a 6 lobe flower, longer in length, and just as tall, with a near perfect stem to vine angle (Will tweak) it is slightly smaller than the 19' pumpkin, but 6.5 days younger. I'm rooting for the 6 lober, and will have to make a decision soon. I also have a nice big 5 lober I set on a massive backrunner on July 1, it is also self pollinated by hand, as are all the clones pumpkins I will pollinate this year (cool seed stock).
I have had seven of the clones 15 set pumpkins be 6 lobes so far, six were on fast moving secondaries, one on the tip of the main. The weather was in the 99 to 100 degree mark july 7 through the 13 and the clone does seem to wilt more than the Holland or the Gadberry. I was bummed when my misting system failed me on the 10th and the tip burnt out of the clones main runner at 20.5 feet. It seems I forgot to figure the wind blowing the mist away in the 101 degree sun.
The clone while doing great is not my best plant. My Gadberry 410 from 2000 is in the perfect position covers 20' X 28' and has beautiful long fat pumpkins 5 and 6 lobe set from july 8 thru the 15 long ass stems with nice cream yellow color.
It's looking like this may be a superior year for me, but it's still really early. They don't weigh diddly till there on the scale!!!!!
