I have to remove 16- 18 excess pumpkins from my plant. I want to know what is the right way to go about it. Do you have to seal the cut? Could i make a plug with captan? Thanks.

I never use Captan or anything else when removing pumpkins and tertiary vines. The plant will "heal" itself. The only thing I do advise is that you rinse your knife off with rubbing alcohol when moving from one plant to another. It's possible to spread disease from one plant to the next with your knife!
