First Time Pumpkin Grower

Omaha, NE

This is the first year I have ever tried growing pumpkins since I was a little girl (I planted and harvested only then). Actually my 9 year old son wanted to plant them, and he is doing all that I did when I was little. We are in eastern NE, and planted the seeds in the backyard on May 28th this year. I hope that that was not to late or to early for our area. So far they are spreading out of the area where we planted (I knew that that would happen, but if I had told my husband how far they vines would grow we wouldn't have planted them), and I have only seen male flowers blooming and have attracted the bees. I think I have identified the female flowers although they are not flowering yet. Approximately how long does it take to see fruit forming on the vines? We planted little jack, Jack O' Lanterns (these are the ones flowering) and Big Max.

Thanks! I went out to the garden tonight, and notice a little bulb (pumpkin?) about 2 inches around at the base of an unopened bloom that looks just like the male flowers. However only my jack o'lantern size plants are blooming. Does anyone have an average number of pumkins you get per plant/vine?

I dont think there is an average, I think what ever mother nature has planned is how it will go, you can self pollinate or let the mother do her thing. Most of us are nutty enough to think we are in control and we try very hard to get what we want and some do but for what you want just get rid of the buggs and weeds and let it happen,I'm sure it will be fine.
