can anyone say for certain whether or not a stem split (lengthwise) means doom ? right now the split hasn't reached the pumpkin, which is less than a foot in diameter. don't want to cull if there's any chance of success ! thanks in advance for any input.

sometimes you get small splits in teh stem that run lengthwise. i wouldnt' worry unless it goes into the pumpkin. they usually split a little then heal, then split and heal. the stem is expanding that's pretty much whats happening. keep an eye on it, and dont make any sudden changes. like dousing it with fertilizer. keep everything nice and steady. maybe put a little fungicide powder on that stem just to be safe.
