Had a terrible storm roll through. It looks like my vines are okay. But it looks like I lost half of my leaves do to broken stems. My question is do I cut off the broken leaves and stems or leave the plant alone and see what happens. It looks like all my pumpkins are okay.

Hoosier....certainly wait a couple days before doing any major pruning. Many of those leaves will come back even though they look like they're done. Many more of those will be fine with folded over stems...they are way more resilient than you can imagine. Give it a good shot of fungiside and a nice boost of fertilizer to get the plant humming again and disease free, Give it a few days right Amy? Joe P.?..........(I lost 60-75% of my leaves in a storm Sept 7 in '98...went around with bamboo sticks and zip-ties righting the leaves, strapping them up and re-burrying vines. If the vines flipped over, right them back up asap...the leaves will start to grow upwards real quick if you dont right them and that makes it harder to burry and organize....Good luck and get back to use with you amazing recovery story.........G

Thanks for the advice. I did have a few vines rolled a little. After a little help here and there it looks a little better. Hopefully in a few days it'll pick back up. It snapped three of my sunflower stems and it hit my corn & tomatoes hard. Anyone else get hit by this storm? I heard over 100,000 people in Cincinnati don't have power.

Hoosier,
I can not add much more than what G had to say, he's right on with what he said. When I had my hail damage in 99, I hit the plants hard with a lot of Nitrogen. This brought back the green growth very fast, but I had a little trouble setting fruit, so you may want to go moderate if you add nitrogen. I am sure your plants will bounce back just fine... Joe P.
