Why would a week old pumpkin develop a small split in its stem? I do not use captain....but do have medicinal sulpher. Should I puff that in the crack? Will this crack interfere with the pumpkins growth? It has grown from 6 inches circumferance on Tuesday evening to 13 inches around today. I fertilized a second pumpkin flower a few feet away on the same vine (a main) today. If both survive, should I cull one later...possibly the one with the split, even tho it is larger ?

how deep is the split? how long is the split? is the split lengthwise or crossways? i like to try and keep fruit as trouble free as possible for as long as possible. this early in the game you can certainly pollinate another fruit and be fine. But if the split isnt bad, and isnt crossways, then you can try and dust it and see what happens. you may very well end up pollinating another fruit that grows better than this one is growing. But if the split is crossways, or goes into the flesh of the pumpkin in any way, i would cull it in favor of a better candidate. Good Luck.

Dont worry they heal fast at this time. My 740 in 99 had three huge splits in the first week and by the time the fruit finished it had no splits they fill right in over time . Most of the time.

My 14 days old has splits in the stem going into the pumpkin tissue. My favorite one actually stopped to grow because of that. Could somebody please check my diary and see how bad it is? The wound seems to have healed but what happens when the fruit gets bigger?

Well thanks, I am relieved as it is my earliest set and fastest growing. I have pics that I am about to post in my diary. You can see the split lengthwise of the stem. I wonder why they split so early...growing to fast? Has anyone ever used sulpher from a drugstore as a dust? I do not have Captain and keep to organic growing as much as possible.

Farmer Scott...the split is not deep. I just posted pics of it in my diary. I must check tomorrow and see if it is getting worse. There is another fruit set further out on the same vine....but by the looks of things the first is going to be ok.
