Would shade cloth act same way? It appears to be similiar to millwire which worked great.

Depending on the brand that you use, I would be concerned that not all the water would drain through.
Just something to think about.

As long as your pumpkin is dry and happy, anything would work. Anyone ever thought about the color of what they put under the pumpkin? White reflects light, black absorbs it. Would that make a difference?
