How close can I get to my plant with a small tiller? Will "pruning" the surface roots hurt.

I never go beyond the outer perimeter of the plant, never between the secondaries. You will damage the tap roots. Be careful not to grab a stray tendril in the tines! Go slow if your unit is capable of operating at slower speeds. --Bruiser

Thanks Bruiser. I got a new honda four stroke mini tiller for fathers day. It's great for getting close to plants and with the worm gear I can keep it slow......Pappy

Pappy- I've got the same unit...it's a great little workhorse!! Another reason to keep it slow is to minimize "jump" should you hit an unexpected rock. --Bruiser

I have found roots beyond the perimeter especially in older plants. If your soil is loose roots may extend quite a way beyond the leaves (as in several feet) especially behind the stump. Just my 2 cents.

I don't have a four stroke honda tiller but I did like the pic of that catfish Pappy! Hope you have the same BIG results with your pumpkins.

Desnowskeer, Thanks for the input I'll keep your 2 cents in mind when I'm churning up the soil.
