I've been working alot lately and came home to find 5 of my seven plants dead. Some were covered with little 1/8" brown eggs and were rotten at the stump at ground level. my others look great. What could have caused the other plants to rot at ground level?

Could anyone out there tell me what they use if anything as a mulch for their pumpkins? I have tried using straw, but it was a bad idea as I seemed to get stuff growing out from the straw as it gets wet. I am a first time AG grower. Thanks a lot for any help.
