I went out to measure my pumpkin and it is 18 inches round. I looked at the stem and I see that it has a split. It looks like someone took a knife and made a little slit in it. Is there anyway to patch this or is the pumpkin doomed??

is the split lenghth or width, does it go all the way into the pumpkin? It is still very early, I wouldn't cut it yet but definately have a backup pumpkin coming. Can you tell how deep it is? How much and what are you fertilizing with? this info might be helpful too. Also, can you post a picture? I don't have a digital camera yet but one of these days I want one, would be great for stuff like this.

It is width ways, and is about 1-2 centimeters deep and it is where the pumpkin comes off of the vine. It is the pumpkins stem. And I just use miracle grow right now and I don't have a digital camera.

hmm, that sounds pretty deep for a young pumpkin but please don't do anything till you get some more opinions. If it were my pumpkin I'd probably be looking towards other females. won't hurt a thing keeping it on for quite a while . Last year I desperately tried to save one with a tiny soft spot on the stem, got it to an est 375 and lost it, that was the bad news, the good news was that plant also produced a 583 550 636 est all from the same plant. lost them to blossom end splits but wanted to share just how much 1 plant will produce!

It was HUGE!! way too big probably filled a 60'X 75' patch. I think this is part of the reason for the splits, just too much energy. This year all my plants are going to be about 30x30' a couple slightly larger.
