I have five plants that I'm raising this year. This is also my first year of raising AGs. I have a Dopp 636 that is puzzling me. All the females and vines on this plant are forest green, no yellow cast to them at all. Could this be a squash plant?? Any input would be appreciated!

it could very well be a squash producer. it does happen. i'm not familiar with the parents of that seed, but even if both parents were pumpkins, it is still possible to throw a squash. sometimes though fruit will start out green and end up yellow/orange.

are the females very old... the new females start out green, but change by the time they are ready to be pollinated. They change to a light yellowish-white. I would say if they have already been pollinated, and are still a dark green , then it is a squash plant...

Justin

P.S. this is just a guess... I would recommend a second opinion.

AMY ! WHAT DID YOU DO !!!!LOl
Fruit color can change from green to yellow --should happen by softball size if its going to happen. Fruit that is green with darker green stripes has a BETTER chance of changing to yellow than regular green ones. Green ones turn yellow when they abort too--deliberately teasing the growers who dont want squash---only to eventually grow a squash whether you want it to or not. Face it folks...you have no control--it controls you !.....Glenn

Here is another question I have. What happens if I pollinate it with anoher plant? Will it be a bi-color (green-orange).I looked the plant over again tonight and I think it is a squash plant, only time will tell. Does Indiana have a record for squash??

what ever cross you do you will not see it until you plant the seeds from that cross next year. and then it,s a tossup pumpkins can throw squash & squash can throw pumpkins

Hoosier..your going to get what you get and there's no way to change it short of playing with light exposures etc....the pollinator will influence the seeds only. If it is a squash, grow it with pride. if you want the seeds to be pumpkins, you will increase those chances by pollination with a good orange pumpkin producer without these parents in the genetic background: 1006greer,697ciliberto,935lloyd and thier progeny or any squash in the background....guidelines only,no guarantees...........G

Hi everyone, my fruit that is set is a nice yellow color. It is a little smaller than a softball. It is six days old. Is this a normal size for this early? I am a first time AG grower and am just curious. Thanks everyone.

I'm going to give the females a couple of more days then I'll take a photo of them to get everyones advice. I think I'll fertilize three times the recommended usage and see if I can't change the color a little. LOL

Hoosier, the Dopp 636 was from a Dill 875, it was open pollinated.

Amy: What type of seeds are you giving out! LOL Just joking. The other seeds you sent me are doing great. Just think about it though if it's a squash I can't find any recorded records on Indiana squash. Your seed maybe the new Indiana state record squash. I wonder if I injected orange food coloring into the vines if that would help the color? Thanks for all your help this year!

I hope you get a big one from it! Actually I believe that 636est was self pollinated but the tag blew away so I felt I had to list it as open pollinated. I think if you're not sure its better to list it as open than to guess. This year I bought flags on wires to stick into the ground. Permanent marker them and I'm set!
