i know a bunch of stuff has been written about the christmas tree pattern and the blablabla pattern and the blabla pattern..my question is..what is the biggest pumpkin that you know of that was grown on a "let her grow where she goes" pattern.. you know just let the plant do what ever no pinching pruning or the such??

Doesn't this question smells like: I only want to know whether I can stay sitting in my porch drinking a limonade and observing how they grow, or instead have I to swept under the Tennessee summer sun with the hoe in my hands a monkey crawling in my back. -:)

LOL at Don, only it's probably a beer instead of a lemonade. I don't really have an answer, probably could find one in the archives of the mallorn list, but it's not my question. I'll be sweating in the Washington sun when it makes it's appearances. The more energy the plant puts into growing new leaves and vines, the less it has for your pumpkins. Is it already starting to look like you bit off more than you can chew? I hope you have a lot of space because I have heard of them covering up to 5000 sq. ft, and that was on a plant that had the tertiaries pruned off. It produced several large 800+ pumpkins, but I can't recall the exact numbers any more. Burying the vines is a must as well. But if you want to just let it run and do it's own thing I imaging you could get some up to 400 lbs. that way if all other factors were ideal. I'd keep the kids and pets away from the patch though if you like them. Those plants are very aggressive. You wouldn't want to have a tragic accident and find Sparky's skeleton wrapped up in tendrils and vines after the frosts hit in the fall and kill the plant back.

hey, beer is right!!! and lots of it too!! i got 9 plants started now and a couple of them are in a area where they have plenty of room to grow and was kinda wanting to do an experiment pruning vs non pruning..it seems to me like most growers here take time to prune their vines and i havent really seen anyone who just let one grow and still get a bigun... i have figured out that seed filing and soaking is a bunch of jazz.. maybe pruning is also??
