Howdy,

If I am not mistaken, a pumpkin is botanically almost the same as a squash, the color depends on the specific species. In my experience, the green ones do not have the same capacity for size that their yellow counterparts do. I am in Northeast Florida (maybe about the same latitude as you) and have been trying to grow big pumpkins for about the last 15 years. I have had good luck with "Big Max" and "Big Moon", especially in early spring but also in summer. I have yet to grow a fruit from "Atlantic Giant" or "Burpee Prizewinner" and I think it is due to my very hot and humid climate--the vines just don't seem to grow when other pumpkin in the same vicinity (green and yellow ones) are doing pretty well. I would be very interested in your experiences or those of anyone growing in a very hot climate.

Hi, yes others grow pumpkins in So. Cal. I live in the Chino Hills. It is hot but you can grow BIG ones. I have a 165 lb. Atlantic Giant going now (7/26). I have had good luck with Big Max and Big Moon but Prizewinner fruit split and rotted. I read about a guy in Tucson, AZ who grew a 700 lb.
