well, i have my own little problem this year, but in your case i would bite the bullet and plant a couple more, instead of WAITING to see what's gonna happen with them. which is what i must do when i get home tonight!!! good luck with this---at least then, a week from now when the first plants still haven't recovered, you will have the others to fall back on......'pal

Did it snap off above or below the two seed leaves? I had one break off at the ground last year and though I was able to get it to root again it was so far behind it wasn't worth the effort.

Fortunately I haven't had this happen with pumpkins but it has happened with vegetable seedlings (ie: Tomatoes) and all I ended up with is a stem that never sprouts any leaves. My guess is that you lost the growing tip and since there are no nodes yet for new leaf formation your out of luck, and like pumpkinpal said, even if they do some how recover it will probably take so long your better off starting over. Sorry.

My 840 for the contest broke off about an inch above ground but below the seed leaves. I started another plant and thank goodness i did because the stem(which was all that was left) on the 840 wilted back and died. I did not try to mend it back together but some growers said it would work. Look back at my post on 5/02/03 and you could read how some growers mended their broken plant stem.

Pumpkins cannont recover from snapped off stems at an early stage of growth. Whether its above the cotyledons or below doesnt matter. The growing point (apical meristem) of pumpkins is always out at the tip. Some plants, such as corn and grass, have growing points that are below the ground, and as such can suffer damage to their tips and recover (thats why we have to mow grass every week) If your pumpkin has suffered a snapped stem, dont even bother trying to nurse it back. Decapitation is a quick way to stop a plant.

OK. Then how about when the cots are virtually rotten due to negligent excessive water? I had one very stubborn Dueck 1056 that got too much water & the bugger eventually popped. But now the cots are rotten. I'll dust it with Captan & wait & see, but I don't have high hopes. Steve

Sounds like a tough situation Steve...if the Cots are suffering from excessive water, I can only imagine the roots have long since drowned. I'd start another seed and give this one a funeral.
