I have gardened in Texas for over 30 years by have never grown Pumpkins. I have few tomato plants that are not setting due to the high daily temps. and am considering pulling them and planting some pumpkins. It's June the 18th. Am I to late? If not, what type of pumpkin should I plant. My girls want the biggest possible, I would just like a little success. Not looking for competition, just something by Holloween

Howie, if you aren't planning on entering any competitions, than you will be okay for a nice Halloween pumpkin. A pumpkin takes about 120 days to mature. Also, they love lots of sun but during the day if it gets too hot, just make sure you mist the plant and when you have your fruit set, you'll want to shade it because the heat will ripen it too fast. If you're going for a giant pumpkin, people will usually wait to see which fruit is doing the best and cull the rest. You might also want to buy a book on How to Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins by Don Langevin and that will tell you everything you'll need to know. Good luck ~Monica
