I'm in northern Massachusetts right on the New Hampshire line at 1200 feet above sea level (which is high for around here). Our normal last frost day is May 20. It's been a cold month and we had ice skimming over our birdbath as recently as May 17. I held off planting my first pumpkins until things began to warm up. Trouble is, I'll be away on business in Maine until June 3. I hope to be able to plant as soon as I return. I don't intend to compete but I'd love to grow a pumpkin at least 400 pounds. Does this sound unrealistic?

If you plant June 3 and germinate within a couple days of June 3, you'll have about 130 days to the October 7 weigh-offs, and over 150 days to Halloween. The prime concern in your area, especially at your altitude, would be first frost of the fall. Keep an eye on that, and you'll be fine. Typically, 120 is considered a full growing season, but the more days, the better, especially in cool climates. If I remember correctly, The Checkons had 800 lb. fruit in about 100 days last year on the way to their 1131 and 1190. So it is possible!
