When I transplanted my plants last year the Main vine came out in the opposite direction than the way I wanted it to travel. Is there any way I can tell which way the vine will go before I transplant it?

Thanks WATER

I would also love to know the answer to that one. This year my transplant is about ready to vine and guess what? I think it might actually go in the general direction I wanted it to go. This was of course by total chance. Hopefully someone will answer you. Maybe it's possible to guide it if it's not going in totally the opposite direction, I'm not sure. Good luck,
Amy

I asked this same question recently. The answer I got was that there is no definitive answer. However, the concensus was that the plant will vine away from the first true leaf. As if the first true leaf was watching the vine grow...

The vine on my direct seeded plant grew away from the first leaf, and then turned toward the 4th leaf, right toward the wall in the back of my patch. I'll be spending the next several weeks coaxing it around 180 degrees to where I need it to go. Reason #456 to plant indoors first.

I read in "Jerry Baker Master Gardener" that all vineing plants cucumbers, pumpkins etc. will always grow to the east. Is that true because my plant will not be growing in the direction that I want it to run.
