I was just curious on what plants were the dominate in your patches so far. I'd have to say mine is a 811 Stellpflug with a 636 Dopp getting honorable mention.

The Emmons 998-00 is looking good; however, the Richart 871-97 is not far behind. Plants are twenty five days old and are growing despite very cool weather. Night time temps in the hoop house are about 46°. Haven't got the heart to put in heaters, when my California friends are suffering through "blackouts"!

my 825 shymanski and 876.5 Lloyd are the biggest. 825 is in it's 5th leaf stage while the 876.5 is in its 4th, but the 876.5 has bigger leaves.

Farmer Tom, I think most of the people growing the 723 Bobier seeds this year acquired them before the 2000 growing season. I know Bill sent out a bunch of them at the end of the 1999 season, but only 5 or so people tried them last year. With the success that it had, I think a lot of growers checked their inventory and were lucky to have some already. To obtain one now, you would probably have to trade another seed of comparable value, such as an 846 Calai or similar seed... Joe P.

I don't have an 846 I have an 869.5 seedling, but I can't trade a seedling. Also the 723 doesn't always produce a big pumpkin, it produced the 581.6 Senesi, that's 1000 poundes, so maybe you could lower the price a little, I have some 841 Pistonos, and some others, I have a spare 354 Eiffler, it came from a self polinated 991 hunt.

FARMER TOM, The reason proven seeds are traded for proven seeds are that they are VERY hard to replace, so you don't blow them on a seed you could get for postage and a bubble pack. Get something of equal value for it, I got lucky, someone wanted an 862.5 Hester enough to trade a 723 for it.....I think Ill go lock it up;).

Oh, I'll trade my 723 for an 825.5 Shymanski, Stelts 801.5 or 705, an 846 Calai, or 900.8 Lyons*.
Thanks, Alex

Farmer Tom, Sorry, I do not have any 723's to trade. I was trying to answer your question and give my thoughts about how so many people came to have them. You're right about the 723 not being a sure thing to grow a monster, not too many seeds fall under that category. Many growers look for seeds with a successful track record and with the 723 seed producing two pumpkins close to 1100 pounds and one over 700 pounds out of perhaps five total people to try it, that really catches the attention of the pumpkin growing community. Best of luck with your 869.5, that could pop you a record sized fruit.... Joe P.

I have an 896 Wells, and a 1056.5 Stellpflug......the Wells is actually kicking the 1056.5's butt! I also have 4 Big Max, and 2 Big Moons growing for the kids to dink around with. Wouldn't it be terrible if they ended up growing a bigger one than me?! I dont want to even think about it!

My 275 Desrosiers made the cut on my first hill and to me he looks to be growing extremely fast. I tried not to get too caught up in keeping the plant from the largest pumpkin. I liked the look of the pumpkins grown on the 300 Mongeon and 835 Maxymillan and am hoping the 275 produces a similar looking fruit. On my second hill I kept the Dopp 788.6. She is a couple weeks younger than the 275 so she is nowhere near as big. I was happy to end up with two plants that came from fruits that were tracked in the 2000 grower diaries on this site. That little bit of extra education helped me make my choice.

cool, I thought that a lot of my others would do better than the calai 869.5, the 746 scherber clone, 478 and 481.5 kilbert, 354 eiffler, and 432 sawtelle, I'll have to make the 869.5 my highest priority, it looks great! I am a little crowded as you can tell, I have more plants including some big max, butt I should still be able to get a big one, the 869.5 should have nice color to, are you sure that's a world record calibur seed, I had no idea it was that good, I knew it was very good, but that's amazing, I feel so lucky!
