I live in central PA and I was wondering when I should pollinate. I've heard July 4 but what if your blossoms are in good position before then? Do you wait for one further out on the vine? I have had probled with premature ripening, Like mid August but I did pollinate Around July1. I think that may have been caused by poor fertilizing and not enough water. Last year It stopped growing in early september but I can't remember when I pollinated. Thanks Amy

AMY Ideally you want to set by July 4. But you want to make sure the fruit is a good 10 to 12 Ft from the your mound.this will stop alarge pumpkin from uprooting plant. Ernie

My biggest pumpkin ever(500+) was 7 feet off the main vine, it didn't up root my plant. Around 10 feet is what i like, a little closer is ok, and farthest is 15, to me it just seems to far away, but big ones have been grown at 20 and farther. Nitrogen slows the Maturing process of pumpkin growth, but makes it grow fast and maybe prone to split, it is a chance most take to get a big one, if they have good supply of Nitrogen.
