There has been a lot of talk about orange pumpkins recently, on Kelly Klinkers post and on MNpumpkingrowers post. The 1159 Richards has gotten a lot of attention, rightfully so, it is a beautiful pumpkin. I thought I would look at getting a couple of 919 Richards seeds from P and P. I just received some Bobier seeds last week, the third order in as many months. Each order comes with a very nice flyer. I looked in the flyer and the 919 seeds were going for 2 seeds for $10. I thought I would order 4, but when I called I found out that the price had jumped to $15 each. This flyer arrived last week and I'm looking at it right now. I understand supply and demand, but I have never heard of a set price going up once demand increased. I have purchased many seeds from Dills over the years and I have never seen a set price change because of an increased demand. I have nothing against P and P. I will definitely buy seeds from them again. Maybe they have a different arrangement that I'm not familiar with. Maybe I'm just venting. Anyway, I think I'm done.

I hear they had a pumpkin crop failure in argentina. Likely to drive prices up here in north america

same thing happened at P&P with the 845 bobier once the word got out about the 1260 weir.

No Brooks, the person I spoke with said the price went up because of the "situation", that's a quote. I mentioned the flyer in my hand but to no avail. I didn't get into it with him, seemed like a nice guy, but I didn't buy any seeds either.

Judging by the color of the 1159, I would say that 15$ a seed for the 919 is a good deal.

Well, I guess that would be like any seed then, like at auction, once a seed is found out that it does really well the price goes up and growers will pay more.

the law of supply and demand has always been evident even in our pumpkin world

its a natural occurence. no one interested ? ya practicly give um away. everyone wants one? ya jack up the price. thats just the way it is. most money raised from seed sales and seed auctions or club promotions go back to support the individual growing clubs. i have no problem with that.

same said for p@p, howard dill seeds,or anyone else that chooses to sell their seeds.
except in their case its a business decision. this is how they earn a living,or support other pumpkin functions

all the more reason you folks should all respect those growers who freely return your bubble packs every year.

You are right Brian, $15 a seed is not unreasonable, that wasn't really the point. And Pap I couldn't agree more with your comment about the generous growers who return bubbles each year. I'm not gonna beat a dead horse. I'm one of P and P biggest fans ( my visa bill will attest to that ). I already have many orange producing seeds and being a resourceful guy, the 919 will find it's way to my patch. Thanks everyone for the input. Andy.

what happened to truth in advertising laws? were there any disclaimers in the flyer?

Your right, demand is up and supply is low. The "situation" is that I told Ray to raise the price. Ray sold out of the seeds that he had and had back orders to fill. I sent him the rest of what I had.

I changed the price on 12/16/07, and if you placed an order before 12/16 the 2 for 10 will be honored. It was changed on line on the P&P web site. I felt that 1 for 15 is a fair price.

Any seed request I have received; I always try to fill the best I can. I appreciate everyone who has taken interest in my seeds.

I sell grass seed & fertilizer for a living & have for over 20 years. Fertilizer costs used to be controlled only by the cost of energy. As Natural Gas changes so too went fertilizer. That's changed now.

The law of supply & demand has always dictated seed prices but the same in now also true for fertilizer.

So today every price list or quotation that I produce includes the bitter disclaimer "PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE".

Large or otherwise price sensitive concerns are entitled to "lock in" for a specified period of time but with that I place both date & tonnage stipulations.

Howard Dill, Ray Waterman, Tom Beachy, etc only need to mark their price sheets with a disclaimer to keep the faith if they don't already. It's the way of the world today.

Thanks Joe, your explanation certainly wasn't necessary but it was a classy move on your part to jump in and clear this up.
PS- I checked the P and P flyer and there is a disclaimer "Prices subject to Change."

Seedoutlet advertised seeds for 1.95 and when I got them they were 1.95. Great deal if you are looking to add to your collection.

Absolutely right Rob, Ray Leonzi is on my Christmas list. I'm a frequent flyer. Oh, almost forgot, I will have two 919 Richards in a week or two.

I'm thankful for any seeds I get for free at bigpumpkins. I have before I heard of this site and paid ten times as much.

I love P and P, I love Joe Richards for producing such a beautiful pumpkin and I am gonna love planting the 919 in the spring. When you think about it, it's a compliment to the grower when a post like this creates this much interest in a seed that is sure to be on everyone's Christmas list for years to come. I'm grateful to be able to plant one in 08 and also grateful to the generous growers who offer their seeds each year. Movin on, Andy.
