The shortest day of the year I believe is on the 21st. I thought it would be interesting to see posts from all over the country on when sunrise and sunset occur in your part of the world. Here in San Diego sunrise will be at 6:47 and sunset at 4:47.

Boy, Stan's got his latitude memorized to four decimal places! Me, too: 45.0000 (Salem, Oregon) If the darkness has started to get you down, go out to your patch, sacrifice a couple of pumpkin seeds, and dance a ritualistic pagan dance--the sun has started it's return! Only 16 weeks until germination!

Hey, Stan! I went to find your place on Google Earth, but it puts me in an apartment complex in Tacoma. I know you don't have room to grow those giants in that neighborhood!

Cliff...I do not understand how that can happen! So much for believing your computer! I'm about three miles E-SE of Tacoma. 1/2 mile South of the Puyallup River along Clarks Creek.

Yeah, well it's hard to know exactly what you're looking at based on the numbers, because there are 4 different formats in Google Earth alone (degrees-minutes-seconds vs. various decimal translations of the numbers). I looked at three of them. Basically this causes all sorts of confusion in the GPS world (IMHO). Maybe try the default numbers in GE?
Still looking for a grower who can identify a giant pumpkin on Google Earth.... but it's difficult because many of us live in rural "low resolution" areas, and you'd have to be lucky to have your picture taken on a day when the fruit is big enough and uncovered (and still it would be VERY small)!

My hoophouses showed up on Google Earth. Taken around 2002. The hoophouses might be 1/4" wide and they were 16', so I really doubt that one could see a large pumpkin!
