horse manure is not hot so get it now for spring and cover with tarp to compost.

The only down side to fresh horse manure is the weeds. Piled now for spring, it won't be too hot.

Horses have only one stomach so they pass a lot of seeds.
Cows have four stomachs so many of the seeds they eat get destroed on the way out.

I still prefer horse manure (once the weeds are composted) since it contains more potassium than cow.

That said, it would be difficult to get a pile of horse manure hot enough long enough over the winter to kill the weed seeds. The best scenario would be to stockpile horse manure now, compost it next summer & have black gold for fall of 2008. Darn Fairfield County real estate values.

Molasses would encourage bacteria which is the workhorse of composting so "yes" it would help. I used to sell a biological package that would cause leaves & manures to break down quickly. The manufacturer just announced they pulled the plug due to slow sales. I'll contact them Monday to see if they have any "clearance" materials that we can get.
