Looks like selfed seeds did pretty well this year. Here's a selection:

1234* Wursten (off 1055 Pitura)
1224 Kirts (735 Pukos)
1180 Krug (1432 Carlson-Peterson)
1180 Barenie DMG (916 Barenie)
1173 Koch (792 Wolf)
1164 Carlson-Peterson (1432)
1121 Koch (814 Wolf)
1065 Christopherson (814 Wolf)
1037 Ornskov (1019 Megchelsen)
1012* Pitura (1055 Pitura)

That's just a quick look at the 1000+ pumpkins, and I'm sure I missed a few. The thing that is really interesting to me is that both the 1234* and 1224 were heavier than what the original seed was capable of (the 846 Calai topped out at 1194 and the 848*'s biggest was 1131*), at least so far.

Not to toot my own horn, but I grew a 1041 lber. from the 603.5 Muller....toot! LOL. Seriously, I'd like to see more selfed and sibbed seed grown in the future. There were some nice selfed seeds in 2007. Those two 1068 Wallace X self, that both went over 1400 lbs., could be good ones. The 1450 Wallace(1068 X sibb) did very well it's first year out.
I'm no expert, but I think selfed and sibbed seeds could be quite valuable in some breeding strategies.

Here's another way to think about it -

in 2000 - 2003 the 846 was one of, if not the top seed (especially if you're looking for color). It tops out at 1192 in 03. 4 years later there's a pumpkin grown which is 30 pounds heavier than the 846's best, off a selfed 846 seed - not even close to the biggest 846 offspring, either.

can you imagine a 1700 pound pumpkin being grown off a self pollinated 1068 or 998 in 4 years?

Thats interesting Andy, and a mighty strong trend, almost 4 times the amount listed grown in 2007 compared to 2006 for 1000+ grown on a selfed.
I searched and found 3 for 2006.

1103 Foss dmg (off 1432 Carlson-Petersen)
1063.5 Leonard (1185.5 Leonard)
1001 Kline (1110 Kline)

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot more selfed grown in 2008.

scbbbc, Andy means the mother was a selfed seed. The 1055 Pitura is a selfed 848 MacKenzie*. The 1019 Megchelsen was a selfed 1068 Wallace, etc.

The 1011 Vanhook was a 1450 Wallace selfed I believe
The 1048 Rahe was a slfed 1450 Wallace
1289 Bosworth and the 1402 Bosworth I believe were both selfed.

My picks for the 2007 crop would be the 1402 Bosworth, 1468 Richards, 769 Lombardi, and 1319 Greene to all do well. Not sure how I originally forgot about the 1041 Wallace, because that one had caught my eye a long time ago, since it was so pretty.

Although I don't (currently) plan on putting a selfed seed in next year, I will likely self pollinate one or two of them.

I especially like selfed seeds when it comes to good colored pumpkins. Selfing will hopefully stabilize the good color in the progeny. For that reason I like the 769 Lombardi 07 as well. It also had nice shape and quite heavy to the chart.

Andy thats interesting about the 846 and the selfed 846. I can't help but wonder if an original 846 grown by one of the top heavy hitters today would not grow an even bigger pumpkin than previously grown due to newer techniques and or cultural practices. I think the seed stock of today is better than just a few years ago but I also think growers and their practices are getting better too.

A selfed seed is when the female flower on a plant (which becomes the pumpkin) is pollinated by a male flower from the same plant.

Andy, great thread. The 848* line has been outcrossed with other green and orange a few times now and to date nothing is as succesful as the selfed strains esp. the 1055 Pitura.

More info on the 1055 Pitura. I saw a couple of these offspring this fall and they all had very smooth surfaces with shallow ribbing on them. Dave pitura and I spoke at length about this traite in the selfed 1055 seeds, This may be one reason to explain why it has out grown the 848*. Most of the 848* offspring are deeply ribbed but it is hard to agrue against a seed as prolific as the 848* has been.

The top weight of the 1055 is not 1234 lbs. I have reason to believe that with better weather conditions (warmer nights and more sun hours) and perhaps a bit heavier to the charts (mine was 3.4%), the 1055 will probably peak at close to 1350 lbs. It remains a speculation, but the 1234* was grown under pretty extreme conditions.

The 1234* was also smooth except one bulge on the one side, which I knew was going to happen because one lobe was slightly deformed.

The 1055 was as difficult to pollinate as I hear the 848* is. I had three abort and the 4th took. For this reason and for better colour I am looking at crossing the 793 Olsen* and/or 633 Blalock* into it. Both have shown great colour and have progeny over 1000 lbs.
