a friend is giving me fresh horse manure.how long does it has to ferment before i put it in the patch.should i treat it with something e.g. lime?thanks ahead for the responses.

It should be fine now to use for spring if it is all you have and the price is right. The only thing is that most stables use wood shavings instead of straw. Straw is preferred because it breaks down faster and probably will not affect PH as much as wood. I used it two years ago and the wood blocked most of the weeds. Have the soil tested in the spring to make sure. Probably should anyway. It is difficult recommmending adding anything before knowing where the PH is presently.

Horse manure is all I use. The stable I get it from uses saw dust. The only thing is plan on spraying with a short acting herbicide in the spring.
