and still grew over 1000 lbs.......

My problem this year is I need to help Pinky at 71 get his seeds going this year. He is quite excited again but his health is limiting him. His daughter says this is the best medicine he could have because it gets him out of the bed and his depression, . The trip I must go on wont allow me to start my seeds til 5/1.....
Too Late? Should I hire a seed starting baby sitter?
Still quite cool in Colorado then, how much more growth do you get by planting them on 5/1 at two weeks old with a hoop. Compared to 5/16 with a hoop?

Your thoughts welcomed........Thank You

starting seeds on 5/1 and putting in ground just after seed coat is off and first true leaf is visable ( around the 8th to 10 th ) is not a big deal.

in new hampshire they go in even later than that and look what bill rodonis did this past year

chances are you will be polinating on time and if anything a few days late on the pollinations is not a big deal

if you have a good seed stock and plant its all going to be good.

Thanks Paps, Its just very important for me to go up and help Pinky start, even if it means affecting my outcome at the end of year. Thanks

We replaced our mutant 848 squash plant on May 27th and that ended up being our largest of the year and patch best weight of 995.5 lbs.

Gary, The plant that produced my 970 was direct seeded in the patch under protection on May 12. Our weather is generally cooler than yours. The 970 quit growing in early Sept due to a couple small splits. If it had kept growing that last week or 2.....?????

Wiz,
In 2005 I direct planted a 517 Glover on July 23rd, it got to 400 pounds before the bottom rotted. It was only on a 150 sq. ft. plant. I live in Carrollton, Georgia. We are located 50 miles west of Atlanta, close to the Al/Ga state line.

Doug,
How long did it grow into the season since I assume you dont have a terminating frost?

Wiz,
Our average first frost is like Oct. 15th. Many years it is on into early Nov. I am sorry but I don't remember about this one. It seemed to quit growing and when I picked it the bottom was rotted out. I think it would of been a good bit bigger had it not rotted.

Sorry,
Doug

Ask other growers from Colorado, Utah, Idaho. Pumpkins grow differently there. I'd go with the babysitter, myself (I grew in Salt Lake for a few years) and would start around the 26th of April so that you could put the plants in the ground the day you get back. You'd probably be fine starting on the 1st, but there's a chance you could rob yourself of a few peak days of 30#/day growth, and it doesn't take many of those to lose a weigh off.

EXactly my point in telling my wife why I should stay home...however,,,,so the story goes....however not an option.....How many pounds should I get handicapp from TheBiz.....lol is what Im trying to determine....if really I would be gaining or not losing that much.... Temps are still quite low here and what can be deadly cold can also go deadly hot, especially with a unattended hoop.....BUt I have some time to figure it out....Im thinking a portable seed starting chamber, I can take them with me....

Wiz, I say..."not going to help Pinky is "NOT" an option!!!" CCW says that we might be able to meet up at Wahoo's in Boulder (btween Christmas and NYears)...bring the biZ!!! LOL Peace, Wayne
