I think that you can use male from any plant as you want (plant dont must have females when you getting males)

there are four ways to pollinate a pumpkin
1. open pollination --- do nothing and let the bees carry pollon from other male flowers from plants in the patch
2. sib pollinations --- using pollon from another identical seed/plant in your patch or someone elses patch
3. self pollinations --- use male pollon from the same plant as the pumpkin you are pollinating
4. cross pollinations --- using male pollon from a different plant, ( seed stock ) and introducing it onto the female segments
open pollinations are not really acceptable in the world of giant pumpkin growers but will make good porch pumpkins
sibb pollinations are great if your sibbing two identical championship quality seed stocks
self pollinations work well if you want to try and reproduce the same genetic balance and wish to carry on a particular seed line but have only one seed
cross pollinations are made when a grower wishes to introduce desirable traits from one fruit into another

Question pap...if you have two plants planted next to each other both from the same seed. Why would a open pollination be bad. If there was no squash plants or pumpkins around for miles isnt there a good chance you could still grow a monster and still be preety sure of the genetics. And has then ever been any open pollinations that broke records like state or any kind.

Uncontrolled is still Open no matter which way you look at it Jason. Is it a bad cross..no do you know what the cross is..no
In the old days back when pap was just a wee little pumpkin grower..I think even the controlled crosses would be considered open by todays standards. Unprotected males and unprotected females.

Thanks Shannon..I guess even if there are no other plants around theres still a good chance the pollen could be from a different plant far away. Bees will travel a great distance.
