4) Howard Dill award- This award will be given to the grower of the prettiest, symmetric, orange-orange red pumpkin at each site. How the winner is decided will be up to each site coordinator.

Thank You! Does part of the criteria have to be that the pumpkin is in the sites top ten or can it be any size?

The GPC rules state its up to the site how the winner is decided. So if the site decides its a 500lb minimum weight then thats part of the rules.

I think what they are trying to prevent is someone growing a Prize Winner, and bringing it to the contest and taking the award.

A 400lb prizewinner is worthy of an award.

I won the Howard DIll award at the Elmira weigh off with a 579 pound pumpkin. It only finished 9th, bu was clearly grown for beauty and not for size. THat is basically what the award is for. While it would be nice to see monster perfect orange symetrical fruits, the award will usually go to a 500-900 pounder because once you get above that range the imperfections such as dill rings, sag lines, stem splits, etc will start to come out.

No Prizewinner is worthy of a "Howard Dill" award. It's a different cultivar. LOL If there was a Burpee award it shouldn't be awarded to a Dill's Atlantic Giant.
Before this year the Dill Family DID have a minimum weight that the GPC used to impose. The GPC doesn't want to interfere with the individual site's decision making process in the matter. Our club sought the Dill's guidance when we set our minimum weight.

Nice pumpkin Pennsylvania Rock http://www.bigpumpkins.com/DiaryImages/FullSize/76144.jpg
The 1110 Wallace threw a nice orange pumpkin for me. I'd like to get an idea of what to shoot for next year at Canfield. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/DiaryImages/FullSize/77381.jpg
Can someone from the OVGPG please describe the requirements for that specific site? This is the closest weigh off for me, and more than likely where I will continue weigh in.
Thank You All! Duane

you still have to impress the judges. any ag weigh off judge that would award the 'prize' to anything other than a ag needs to have his credentials revoked. That along makes the 500 pound minimum rule unnecessary. arbitrary minimum weights for this prize are dumb.

we give the howard dill award and the sngpg prettiest pumpkin award to the fruit that best suits the name "prettiest" ---- three judges make the decision
usually being that we are a giant pumpkin weigh off this alone would indicate we are looking for a pretty giant pumpkin. not a porch pumpkin but something that is from the atlantic giant family
weight is a minor issue for us. we look first at pretty and second at size
as noted earlier being that it is an atlantic giant pumpkin weigh off naturally the award will usually go to a grower who shows something at least 300 to 400 lbs and up
thats not to say a smaller one cant win. it can. its up to the judges

I think 500lb minimum is fair. They have to set some minimum. Does anyone know if the PA-Altoona weighoff does this award?

I believe all GPC sites get a Howard DIll award ribbon in thier packages. It would be a nice page by the GPC if they could post the yearly winners of the Howard Dill award at the bottom (or heck, even the top) of each GPC sites page. This would let people know it is a desirable seed for color and shape, even though it probably finished out of the top ten.

Maybe we could have another ribbon for the pumpkin that holds the most bags of sand after being cut open. Hmmm, what could we call it? Who can we name it after?
