I just seen where the deadline to enter your pumpkins in the AGGC data-base is 11/30/07(two days). Just thought Id remind growers just in case they forgot.

How does one obtain a pass word to access AGGC?

Thanks TIM

Do you need to be a member to input data?

I believe that any pumpkin over 500 lbs may be inputted by a member. Not sure how a non-member get's their fruit listed but it does happen.

A non-member gets their fruit listed by a member who inputs all necessary information.

Of course it makes sense to limit access to the data to members only. But, it seems strange to me that a non-member wouldn't be able to input data. Nevertheless, I think that's the case.

Thanks for the heads up Brooks. I just sent my info. in. Without your reminder, I might have missed the deadline.

Crammed,

A non-member cannot input data only because they cannot access the site without a password. A password can be verified after a membership fee is paid.

Also, anyone caught giving out their password for a non-member's access is subject to being booted. I seem to recall a moratorium on new membership a year or two ago for this very reason. It takes money to keep a site going, and Mike was being ripped off by those doing just that.

It seems pretty strange to me that there is all this pressure from the aggc and others to make sure that people register their pumpkins - yet you have to have a membership to do it. I was happy - even flattered - that someone wanted me to tell them all about my pumpkin. went to the site and found out i couldn't get on to do so. Looked all around and found no real information about signing up, or about the value of what a membership might provide. I just kept thinking that i must be making some sort of mistake. at this point, i see no real value to registering my pumpkin - especially if i have to pay to do so. Just my thoughts...

The value in registering your pumpkin is to make the information readily available to other growers. And you're not paying just to register your pumpkin. You can do a ton of genetic research of your own to help you decide crosses.

You can also register with briansinsanity.com, another AG genetic data base. It's free and becoming just as valuable, if not already, as the AGGC data base.

For anyone interested, there is a FREE level of aggc membership that lets you see the basic data (and input YOUR data!) The full (paid) membership lets you do all kinds of cool sorts & queries of the data.

At risk of sounding like a commercial, I can tell you that the AGGC is an invaluable genetics research tool. I'd recommend getting a free membership, then upgrade later if you like what you see. Mike is constantly tweaking the site and making it better. You can inquire directly with the webmaster at [email protected]

Hey guys it's only $20 to join. The information on that site is worth WAY more than $20. I'm surprised, frankly, with as much time as it takes to maintain a site, that Ken doesn't charge to be a member of Big Pumpkins! And if he did, we should all pay it gladly!

Even as a beginner (with a lot of in-family help) I really spend a lot of time on that site. The site is a valuable tool; not only as a study tool, but as a record-keeping tool. I got my membership as an early Christmas gift from Brooks. One of the best gifts I've ever received.
