I want to hear a few opinions on this topic. I am starting to see something I have feared for a while now. 11 years ago I started growing giant pumpkins as a hobbie. I could contact just about any grower and trade seeds with him. In 1999 we formed our New Hampshire club over the next several years many clubs began to form. I think this is good for people to meet others and grow our hobbie. I am in favor of seed auctions. I am not in favor of selling of unproven new seeds. If we hold back on getting these seeds out there it is going to slow our progress. Myself like many working class people have a hard time paying for gas health insurance and other things that have really gone up over the last couple years. I just hope money dosnt ruin a good thing but what worries me is that money usually always ruins a good thing !

I guess it depends on where the money is going to. If it's a club auction and the money gets cycled back to the growers in prize money, or to support new grower seminars, ect it's for a good cause.

Except for the cases of low seed counts on the "new" seeds, I wouldn't be too worried. I started about the same time as you and i've noticed that if you want to plant a new seed it's not too hard to get. Even most proven ones (within reason) can be free for the asking.

i am a newbie grower who has had no problem finding seeds with no cost. THe growers on this site are awsome at sharing with us new to the hobbie and sharing more then one side too. Great work and thanks to everyone.

I would have to agree with Andy if you want a seed and if that seed is going to hit the dirt 90% of the grower are willing to give you that seed.

I have been trading seeds since the early 90's and have had as many as 400+ bubbles in a year. It feels good to share with anyone interested in my seeds to see them pop up in the fall on the result pages.
The issue I have is sending so many seeds out and see the same people ask for them and not see the seeds or those peoples names on the results for any given year. I also get upset when I see a grower decide they are no longer going to grow and put their seed collection up for bid to attain personal gain.
These and more cases have led me to start donating more to clubs and far less growers for the simple reason I would rather see a club make money than an individual. It also allows me to have better seed counts to give out if any should prove to be a good producer and get them into capable hands and clubs who can put the money to good use.

I gave the large majority of my collected seed to a club with no restrictions. There were only three simple reasons.
1. The club would redistribute any way they
wish.
2. I can grow only one in my patch size.
3. I am not concerned about growing 1500
lbs. until I can effectively grow 1000+.
95% of all seed out there will still out
grow my proven grower's ability.

JuanJo,
