I asked this question last year and got a few answers but they did not work has any body got an other answer.
When I transplanted my plants last year the Main vine came out in the opposite direction than the way I wanted it to travel. Is there any way I can tell which way the vine will go before I transplant it?

I plant in the center of the plants area and train the vines to cover the entire area. So, I'm not concerned which direction the main runner travels. However most (about 4 out 0f 5)of the main runners go ENE. I believe there are 2 reasons. First, the sun rises in the ENE and we get more sun in mornings than afternoons. All plants tend to grow toward the most Sunlight. Second, the prevailing wind is from the SW, and tends to lean the plants to the NE.

maybe its just coincidence, and since this will only be my 4th year its very well possible, but my main vine has always grown directly opposite of the direction of the first true leaf. scott

i was talking to a long time grower that told me if you plant your seed point end down that where the seed was attached to its umbilical cord there are 2 tiny holes one near the very tip of the seed and the second slightly above that the one closest to the tip is the hole that the root comes out and the upper hole is on the opposite side of the direction the main vine should travel i had marked my peat pot so that i could tell if this was so but couldn't find the mark when i went to put the plant in the patch like len's plant my vine also grew in a ene direction and i also get swesternly winds hope this helps i also plant the center of my patch

If you didn't have the influence of of sun and wind to send your main runner in a certain direction, I'm quite sure that "Farmer Scott" is correct. The main runner will go opposite the first true leaf. It would be interesting to see if you can consistantly predict which side of the "seed leaves" the first true leaf will grow, by how you position the seed in the soil. For most AG seeds the tip angles a little in one direction. If you plant your seeds flat they will emerge with the seed leaves oriented with the length of the seed. Record the direction the tip was angled and find out if the first true leaf consistantly grows on that side or the opposite side. P.S. My "Dowsers Pendulum" says the first true leaf will be on the side the seed tip was angled too.
