Hi Everyone. I'm a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and am working on a story about giant pumpkins and growers. (It will run on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day.) I'd like to know what you do with your pumpkins after the growing season? Do you make pies? (I know this probably sounds stupid, but....) Thanks for any help you can provide. Please feel free to call me, or e-mail our number so I can call you. 618.624.2438. -Georgina Gustin

My church youth group tossed it from the gymnasium roof. The village squashed our plans to blow it up this year. :(

Made a swimming pool for the kids last year. This year I have a couple saved to make into sleds for the local Christmas parade.

Dang! I wish I could grow one big enough for a swimming pool.....or maybe a bass pond. My pumpkins are displayed in the front yard, then I cut them up and put them back on the garden before winter. By spring there isn't much left of them.

I gave one pumpkin and one squash this year to the Hardings Nursing Home here in Waterville. The residents (people who stay at a nursing home) had there own great little guessing game at the weights. I did this two years ago also. They have a great day of fun on Halloween.

We carve ours then when Halloween is over Sister dearest always runs them over with her lifted truck. She enjoys smashing them, then puts the video on youtube for all to enjoy and laugh at.

Some were displayed whole at various locations (Town Hall, private homes & businesses, etc). One came home here to be carved. The three smallest ones went to food pantries & were baked into pies. This year not a single one (other than early culls) went to waste or animal feed.
I never did hear how the needy & homeless liked their pies...we can only hope for the best but I recommended a 10% increase in sugar. YIKES!
