Is it appropriate to include religious activities as part of a club gathering? Just wondering about others views on this. I've always felt that clubs were to be non-denominational and all inclusive to the pumpkin obsessed.

Some growers are not that religious until the season starts: Oh God, no (snow, hale, frost, wind, fungi, bugs, animals)in the patch. Oh God, please bring me polenated females. Oh God, please make it grow faster. Oh God, please don't let anyone see my tape overlapping. Oh God, please don't make it split, get it on the truck, let the forklift drop it, etc. Thank God it made it to the scale. God, why did it come in 100 pounds light? Did I not pray enough?

Lets not confuse "god" with the "pumpkin god". Those are two totally different entities. Everyone who grows AG prays, but its to the pumpkin god. Some of us also pray to god.

I pray to both "gods." It can't hurt one way or the other right? It's what keeps me sane during the growing season! LOL!

Rob, Which god are we talking about here. Many different religions. Each with their own book of funny tales. LOL

I liked this but wasn't sure about post it until I saw this thread, and I think it will be ok. As for which God you are talking about, whichever one you refer to for guidance would be best. It can't hurt. Enjoy!
Being a good person is like being a pumpkin. God lifts you up, takes you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. He opens you up, touches you deep inside and scoops out all of the yucky stuff -- including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then He carves you a bright new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see. This was passed on to me from another pumpkin. Now, it is your turn to pass it on to a pumpkin of your choice. I liked this enough to send it to all the pumpkins in my patch. Have A Happy Fall!

There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people...religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin "Linus Van Pelt" I believe these are good words to live by

My opinion is that if it's a pumpkin club, it's not a religion club. They aren't really related in any way. Several growers are religious, and Jim Ford has even written a nice book that ties pumpkin growing and his faith together. But at a club function, I don't think it's appropriate to include religion because not all the members may have the same views, and that needs to be respected.

Pumpkin Clubs are private organizations so we are free to set standards on membership. The Supreme Court has heard rhis matter & agrees. One example is The Boy Scouts of America. BSA dosn't dictate any particular religion but we DO require that members believe in God by whatever name the believer uses.
