Sorry,,How rude of me... Congrads to the growers for the successful year they had this year. I was working in the patch today trying to fix it so that if it comes a heavy rain and starts running heavy, like it did earlier this year and washed a lot of good soil away, that it hopefully will stop it from washing away again. I came in and and took a break and posted the message to tumbleweed without saying something nice to the successful growers.

Thanks to Steve Peterson for putting on a really great weigh off and awards dinner. This was the second year of our weigh off, lot bigger and better than last year. Some really big pumpkins this year. Congrats to Michelle, really nice pumpkin and grown south of us, can use, we don't have long enough days anymore for a excuse. Brenda and I met a lot of really nice people and looking for to seeing them next year. We let some of you get away without getting your emails. Here is ours [email protected] Would like to try some of your seeds with ours. Randy & Brenda

Really glad to see Leonardo bring some of those big gourds.
Went to his patch and saw where he had to dig holes as those gourds would keep growing to the groun! Very funny but DAMN impressive.

Acculy i herd it said (Quoted from a heavy hitter) that he would give us 250 lbs to be fair as to compeat with our northern partners well that would put michelles pumpkin at 1376 pluss 250 = 1626 --- equell to a 1626 up north , people down here do grow serously but like last yr concider we had 47 days over 100* in row (YES FORTY SEVEN IN ROW) pluss more than that of over 100* , Thats only one streach !!, & some of thouse days were 119* Thats why some of the great acheivements by people like Hotpumpkin in AZ I certainly can Appreaciate << Enough said !!

I guess i got a little off topic when someone said we make up excuses down here !! I could say same thing as to the perfect weather (for growing pumpkins) some have !! & if i ever mentioned about the shorter days ,Its probly because i read it in the vol #3 book !! Maybe i just took the quote wrong way , but how would you have took that quote if you here !!! Iv seen people do a lot down here , Me for exsample ,JUst look at sled i built to move pumpkin down hill ,If you had it built you would spend 8-9 thousand,& that was intended to move only my first pumpkin the 872.5 Bassett, I wont even get into the 10- 20 thousand pluss pounds of rockes moved every year & chiped off peice by peice, & thats only tip of iceberg !!! OK now im ok & im sure you were just kindo jokeing anyways !!

fissssh....we have made excuses down here for along time. I mean...some growers have. pete has always insisted that we could grow big pumpkins here and he was right. no more excuses!!!!! the growers up north and back east have to do alot of things we DON'T because they have chances of early frost. you should see the greenhouses the guys up north have built to protect their plants in the spring or in the fall. we have a great climate and most times just need to work on keeping plants cool with misting systems. i will take that over hail storms (dakotas and colorado growers) and shorter growing seasons. i think seeing the big pumpkins grown all over the country this year has invigorated growers everywhere. the sky is the limit. no more excuses!!! cindi

I agree with Cindi. When I started 3 years ago, I was told California growers can't compete with growers farther north. This year Pete showed everyone that is not true. No more excuses. Congrates to all who entered and I hope to be there next year.

I think theres been a little misunderstanding on 2 sides , first it was probobly my interpitation of the word excuses & south of us, When i live close to as south as you can get in calif , I took it as'' we down here all make excuses , & since before this yr theres never been a 1000 lber growen, i felt I & others were put down by that statement ! When one thing thats kept me growing is iv always belived that one of us down here could & would eventuly grow a monster , Iv never bought into that not long enough days, But the first yr i did wonder if that could be true as thats what i was tought by lots of people on this sight , no one from down here ever said that , that is what is said in vol #3 also,, But yes I do agree with pete as it can be done there where he lives & here some 380 miles to the south of him ! But I do belive the chances of weather being sutable to growing a monster here is less than in the upper latitudes , Acculy if anyones ever had Forty seven days of 100* pluss In ROW Fallowed by Cold spell , Theres no way ''NO WAY " your going to grow a monster (To me monster is 1200 pluss)in thouse conditions , My misters were going full time & had umbrells covering ends & got out everyday & watered ground by hand several times , Our weather can be good some yrs like this one was best i can ever remember I dont know what im capable of as luck would have it my plants had problems this yr & were pulled up when pumpkins were around 30 days old , One thing i can say forsure is if your life depended on it and you had three years to grow a 1200 lber and your choices of where to grow where eather here or in the northetrn lattiude states ,Youd know & i belive youd be growing in some of hundreds (if not thousands) of other places up there & not here 150 miles from border , Yes we can be competitave , just not as often !!!

Going more extreem !! Anyone ever been to phoenix arizona in summer , try growing competively there !!! Even if all the people in the world who ever grew a 1000 lber lived there ! you would have all the people in world who never grew anything over 1000 lbs & live up in northern lattiudes < id be willing to bet the farm that the ones up north would be beating the ones in Phoenix AZ !!! & they could use all the misters in the world to try!! It isnt the length of sunlight (but helpfull) but the intenceaty of suns rays !! Lets not forget that california is a state that goes more than half ways to canada !
