I'm surprised the 664 has not got more play than it has. It's top 5 offspring average is 1350 lbs.

Really missed you there Chriss. Most exciting weigh-off I've ever seen!
The 664.5 has been good to Bob and will be in great demand this winter. One thing I've noticed, however, is that he is the only one who has been able to grow big with it.
And these are not 664.5 crosses...they are the one and only.
I was fortunate enough to get one last year and cross it with a 1030 Armstrong, which produced our PB of 993.5 this year. Hmmmmmmm. Anyway, 664.5 x 985 Werner? Hmmmmm.

Do pumpkins have to be grown in the same state they were weighed in to make that states record?

congrats doc. i know someone who grew the 664 this year and crossed it with the 998 pukos. the 664 was taping over 500 lbs in 30 days. it developed a soft spot where the vine marked the pumkin and it stopped growing. he couldn't find any other reason why it stopped. i think i will give this cross a shot next year.

Wow Brooks. I had never heard that until today when Bob and I were conversing at the pumpkin display during our seed sale. He told me that the 664.5 WAS basically a poor soil seed and I never even asked him.

what makes a seed a poor soil seed or a good soil seed

The only explanation he gave was that it was very good at grabbing everything it could from the poorest of soils. Sounds like the conclusion of someone who has grown it consistently well when no one else seems to be able to.
