I was wondering if any one has had problems with Black Nightshade weeds in there pumpkin patch. I have been fighting them this year. I have been unable to get rid of them. They have left berries all over garden when I pulled plants out.
I would like to know if anyone has a remedy to rid them from pumpkin patch. I plan on working soil this week if weather permits. Is there an herbicide I could treat the soil with? Should I treat in fall, spring or booth?

if black nightshade is the same as our deadly nightshade?
the only way to keep on top of it is to hoe.
if the berries hit the soil you will have replacements for a few years to come.

There is a herbicide that some commercial growers use. The consumer market is called Preen. We have use it in the field pumpkin patch several times with no adverse effects. One years weed equals seven years of seed...which is so true for a pumpkin patch. Sometimes the best method of control is shallow surface hoeing.

You can try 24-D, just don't get it on the pumpkin plants.

The problem is it germinates late in the season, after the pumpkins are growing and the vines are buried. It makes it difficult to access because the pumpkin is already growing. I have the nasty stuff but it doesn't seem to cause too much problems. Hoe what you can, pull what you can, and don't worry too much about it. I would be hesitant about using something like preen in my pumpkins.
