Now I know pumpkin growing is not a numbers game but i thought this info might be interesting. The following stats were gathered from the weights above.

Pumpkins that weighed 1000 pounds or more were grown off of seeds that came from:

1500+: 0.7%
1400+: 4.68%
1300+: 7.03%
1200+: 10.93%
1100+: 18.75%
1000+: 21.09%
900+: 12.5%
800+: 7.81%
700+: 7.81%
-600+: 8.59%

What this data means is

ex: 21.09% of this years pumpkins that weighed over 1000 puonds were grown off of pumpkins that weighed between 1099-1000Lbs.

So if odds were all that counted in pumpkingrowing you would be more likely to grow a pumpkin over 1000Lbs if you grew as seed that came out of a 1000lb+ pumpkin. This info may help in your seed choices next year.

THERE ARE ERRORS ON THE GPC PAGE SO THIS INFORMATION IS NOT ENTIRELY ACCURATE.

Thanks for the info. I think the above post also proves that more people are growing seed from pumpkins over 1000 lbs than under.

It also proves how many good seeds are out there. We don't all have to fight over two or three top seeds.

That is an interesting list but wouldn't the above info show that there are more choices of seeds to grow in the 1000-1099lb range that will reach over 1000lbs because they are more common than seeds from 1400 or 1500lb pumpkins since there just aren't as many seeds to be grown as opposed to numerous seeds from the smaller pumpkins.

Interesting data Alex. I think Gourdzilla makes a good point. Brad may be correct as well. Personally I like to look at the crosses, how the mother and father performed in each cross, and what the seeds produced in the past, when considering a seed's potential. Although I admit, so far orange color has greatly influenced my choices.
Thanks for putting the data together.

correct gourdzilla...i expect that next year the % will swing to the higher numbers. I also think that we should try more small pumpkins

Sorry but may be I have't undestand well cause my bad english!
you say that the number in side of your list is the number of the pumkins that this seed have growed?
ex 1110 wallace (20) pumpkins ower 1000?
Please let me know and sorry
Sergio

Alex,
I didn't notice those numbers in parenthesis, until Sergio asked the question. Can you explain what they mean?

I think I figured it out. You're counting the number of seeds that have produced over 1000 lbers., in 100 lb. brackets...such as 24 from 1100-1200 lbs., 27 from 1000-1100 lbs., etc. Correct?

Interesting observation, however I will not support the conclusion as accurate. This is due to the propensity to skew the data by weight selection rather than genetic merits.

correct doug.

Tom i had no intention for this to make up for genetics. This just might help if you are trying to decide weather you shoud grow a 900lber with great genetics or 1100lber with great genetics.

Great genetics could also be replaced by "same cross". This would be a slighty faulty analogy because the 1231 and 998 pukos are an exception. There are likely more exceptions to this idea though.

10/16/2007 7:01:47 PM

MNPG(Al)

should elaborate that the 1231 and 998 are an exception because of the propecidy for the 998 to grow huge fruit ie. 1698

i'm such an idiot the 1231 and 998 are different crosses
so ignore what i said about them and same cross.

i'm sure that there is an example were there is two pumpkins with the same cross and the smalller one did better
