My understanding ( at least on the Canadian side ) is that passports are only mandatory if you are flying or travelling by boat. It will be mandatory for vehicle travel as well, but not in affect yet. Having said that, if it were me, I would get the passport and avoid possible delays.

That is the way I understand it also. From the USA to Canada and back no passport required at least for the coming year.

thats true you don't need a passport to drive until 2009

Good idea to get one if you plan to leave the country. It takes some time to process so I would do it sooner than later if you decide. Also, put Canada as the destination. It will be processed faster.

I dont think ya need it but some of my buddys got them for canada, I would get one any way, to be safe, it might be how thay feel that day.

Just this summer we needed a passport going from Washington into Canada and from Alaska into Canada and back. We were traveling on ships and planes and was told that if we crossed the border by train we would also need a passport.

Not sure if this is correct, but have heard, that in '08...all boarder crossings will require passports...air, ship, driving!!! Best bet would be to start now, as passports take 90 days or so to acquire, better safe than sorry!!! Peace, Wayne
