I'm gonna cut back to 8 AGP 3 or 4 watermelon and a few LG's next year. I need to stay married so I need to spend more time with the wifey.

No that would well suck if she beats me but Id still be proud of her. She used to help me seek and destroy every svb egg of my plants. She even doesnt mind talking genetics and watering systems with me. Shes sort of a pumpkinholic like myself.

Last year, my first year, I grew 2 plants and got 3 giants of about 200 pounds a piece. This year I had 4 plants, a new patch, and 3 pumpkins go down on me due to soft spots. So, less is more, but if I didn't plant 4 plants, would I have had a pumpkin go to weigh off, or, would that one pumpkin have been bigger because it had more room to grow?
Hubby does care, he just won't admit it. He was helping me shovel horse fertilizer tonight, a full trailer load! Whew, are we sore tonight after all that. AND, willing to go get as much as I need to grow an even bigger pumpkin next year!

for those who grow only one plant, do you still only leave 1 fruit on the plant and go for broke or not?

Three this year in a 25' x 80' area but we'll be double this size next year (50x80) so six will be it.

I pollinate the first and second ones on the main vine. I try to hope for at least 10 feet out and further. take a day 10 measurement of the first one. Then when the second hits day 10 take a measurment of that one. Now compare the two day tens. By now the first one should be at about day 20, compare that day 20 measurment with the Ailts/Landry chart, if it looks like its on pace for a biggun'...Go for it! It's a big gamble, so I'll also run a snake plant (main vine only) along the edge of the patch for pollen and insurance...Hey I need atleast one carver for halloween.

I grew 7 this year but hoping I can talk myself into 4 next year, I feel 4 will get ya aleast 2-3 with all going well. I feel 4 plants is way more than enough work for one person. If you grow 7 plants cause ya cant help yourself, you lack on the rest, but its all in what you want to do. Its pretty easy to say at a minimum each plant consumes 1 hour a day if properly cared for. And you can guess I didnt spend 7 hrs a day caring for mine.

A snake pattern plant is only allowing the main vine to grow, pinch off all secondary vines as they start to develop. This way you have a plant with only the main vine growing along the outside edge of your patch. Do to very limited patch space, this helps for cross pollination purposes and for an extra pumpkin as well.

with just a main vine, how big is it possible for the 1 pumpkin to get?
is this vine burried like other layouts are normally?
how far from the edge is should the seed and vine be planted and running?

maybe i can run 2 snake pattern vine plants along the long edges of my 16'x25' patch and then have 1 plant starting on the opposite end and x-mas tree layout down the middle.

I grew 12 plants this year, way to many. I think I'll do better with like six, that way I can spend twice as much time on each one. :)
