i recently tilled up an expansion for my patch. before the snow comes this winter, should i throw a big tarp pver the patch for the whole winter or does it not matter until i til again in the spring?

cover-crop ie winter rye, hairy vetch or clover. winter rye germinates in cool weather.

A light mulch won't hurt either. Can till it in in the spring.
