On 9-30-2007, we cut both pumpkins and took them to Roswell Wool to be weighed. Brad, Evan, Jeff, Farah and myself were at the weighing in. Bronson with Roswell Wool was kind enough to open up and get the scale going for us. #1 OTT measurements were 251" with an estimated weight of 341 pounds. #2 was 255" with an estimated weight of 357 pounds. Here is where it gets weird. Both pumpkins weighed 311 pounds.
We took the better looking one, which was #1 to the Southeastern New Mexico State Fair to be entered. #1 was put into the "Whopper" division, which paid $150.00. #1 won the "Best Whopper" and 1st place ribbons. I showed a picture of #2 to Anthony Martinez at Wal-Mart and he bought it on the spot.
Needless to say, I will not be trying to grow two pumpkins on secondary vines on one plant next year.
On another note, we won 1st place ribbons for our cherry tomatoes and cushaw squash. We won 2nd place ribbons for our porter house tomatoes and green chili peppers.
We did get the 2007 New Mexico Atlantic Giant Pumpkin record at 311 pounds. www.backyardgardener.com/record.html
This was my first year growing an Atlantic Giant. We had a great time growing and we are very happy with our results. I want to thank my wife for supporting me in growing our first AG. My sweet little Trinity for holding the sign for the weekly estimated weights. Brad, Evan, Jeff and T-Mac for helping us move these monsters. Don Langevin and Gail Damerow for their books. BigSeeds.com. The Wiz at ColoradoPumkins.com and everybody that has answered to many many questions that all the new growers were posting on BigPumpkins.com. The Greenery, Roswell, NM. Cliff and Jim at Roswell Seed, Roswell, NM. Jack Dage of Las Cruces, NM and Jack and Jeanie Foote of Buckhorn, NM.
We have created a lot of interest in growing Atlantic Giants in Roswell, NM. We hope to have some competition next year. Maybe Roswell could be known for gian

Great to hear the results.

Make sure and stay in contact with me as our climates are pretty similar with low humidity issues and heat. I will be trying again next year starting 1 Feb. No way am I growing in 110 F weather in the middle of summer.
