I see lots of growers with nothing holding them pumpkins in the beds of the truck except air. A few straps does wonders when you slam on the brakes. A bale of straw will save your bed.

Great advice, and thanks! Still need to strap mine down tonight. Otherwise all tucked in and ready for a long drive.

You said it, about 5 years ago, I was on the way home from my weigh off, 4 blocks from home when someone ran a stop sign right in front of me. I hit the breaks and rolled my pumpkin right off the pallet. I was lucky that there was some carpet on the bed in front of it, all I did was scrape it up!!!!!

Shannon is right, I carried my first pumpkin ever to our weigh-off last week in the bed of my pickup. I had hay bales in front and behind it as well as a bale on each side. I had to use a strap over top of the side bales and pumpkin to hold those bales on. When I got to the weigh-off I noticed that almost everybody else had nothing or maybe just a little padding around the sides to keep them from getting beat up on wheel wells. I felt like an idiot at first because I had a lot of overkill but then I got to thinking about it and figured better to be safe than sorry.

I agree completely. I see way too many pumpkins traveling for "show" not for safety. I use my lifting tarp over the top and that is held in place with automotive seatbelts front and rear. No matter what happens I feel it will stay in the truck and not cause any damage to anything or anyone else. Being covered may also help some of the "gawkers" to stay in their own lane because they didn't realize what you were carrying.
