Today I finally got to take my first pumpkin ever to the Virginia State Fair weigh-off. The last 2 years of trying were both heartbreaks. By no means did I come close to finishing at the top but I managed 694 lbs. To say I was grinning is an understatement!
I owe much of the credit to a great friend of mine who gave me seeds 2 years ago to start out, has been there everytime I've called him about a problem no matter how big or small and without hesitation shares his knowledge about growing these giants. Above all else though he is so incredibly selfless about this hobby of ours. His words of encouragement throughout this season actually convinced me that just maybe I could finally have something at seasons end worth hauling to the weigh-off. Well, it wasn't all that impressive to the rest of the world but to me it was pretty darn cool.
I sincerely hope that each grower out there has at least one "great friend" like Ed Robinette (MrD&Me).

Thank you Ed!!!!

Most people have never seen a 500 lbs pumpkin, 694 is awesome, great job some day we may all be as educated and experienced as the worlds top growers, in the end all that matters is that we live long enough to see the day,

Mark, Congratulations! I agree, friends are what makes life worth living!! Next year will be my first year to grow . I'm just reading Vol II How to Grow World Class... I don't even have seeds yet, and I was going to post a req on the Seed Exchange, but any chance you'd be willing to share from your 694? I'm not dreaming of breaking any world records, I just want to have fun and see the grandkids laugh at the joy of their grandmother growing a giant!
