Hey Folks, Up here in Erin, Canada, (hour from Toronto) we got nailed with frost Saturday and Sunday night, I had my giant covered, but the plant is damaged and dieing. Should be just over 500lbs. Not huge for some but for my second year I more then doubled over last year.
What's the best way to keep the Pumpkin healthy for weigh-off October 5th at the Erin Fall Fair?

Just leave it on the vine. The leaves may be gone, but the vine is alive and will continue to nourish the fruit until the day you cut it.

I find it much easier to get into the patch now that I can see the ground....

My neighbor has a 600# pumpkin sitting in his patch. After Saturday morning you can hardly tell there was ever a plant there. Not a stalk standing.

Safehouse, tell me Stillwater is this weekend, ok? Not much left except something under a feather quilt. I found my favorite pair of gloves, a shovel, and a few empty beer cans, you're right it is easier to see.

Chris, anything more on the place and date? Haven't heard a thing, and I've been waiting to hear from Joe asking for money! 26 days with no leaves, is it possible?

Bob, If you cut it from the vine, you might loose 1-2 lbs./day, depending on air temps. If you leave it on the vine hopefully you can keep the weight where it is, or maybe loose less weight(it may actually gain weight for a few days). If the pumpkin looks good and solid, it can keep for quite a long time. If you want an earlier weighoff, you could go to Austin(last weekend in Sept. I think) or Delano(Oct. 7).

Thanks Doug. I think I'll try and hang in there, she gets the feather quilt at night. So do you keep feeding/watering? I'm assuming yes.

I'm no expert, but I'd water as needed. Feeding is your call.

bjx2, Stillwater is the 13th at a new location. It's at Lowell Park in Stillwater RIGHT on the river. On the east side of the bridge. It will be a prime location. Everything is going to be bigger. The chamber is bringing in vendors in an attempt to attract more spectators. This could become a very very large event. I'll have Joe post all the details in the weigh-off section. If you have further questions you can email me.

Try this sometime. When you cut your fruit, leave about two feet of vine on each side of the fruit. Get some old milk jugs filled with water, and put the cut ends of the vine in the water. My little one sucked down a couple of gallons on the way to the weighoff doing this!
