We had a hard freeze in Anamosa. No more growth on the gourds or watermelons now. I hope everyone in the area was able to protect their best plants.

Salamanders, smudge pots, tarps, blankets, space heaters, light misting, whatever it takes. Heck - offer the huts to the homeless so as to borrow their body heat. LOL

If you're like Don Young today & you're still in it to win you might even ask for devine intervention.

You go Don!

Had frost here in MN. Covered both plants with tarps. One plant faired pretty good, the other has damage on the leaf edges, even when it was covered with a tarp. Those leaves that weren't covered are mostly done for.

oh by the way a one night frost can be controled by misting or watering over head every few hrs

We had a good old fashioned freeze. 25.5 on my digital at 6:30 this morning. Brrr. I wonder how cold it got in the snowmobile capital of the world? I bet there was some midnight oil burned there last night....heh heh.

I don't know what the big deal is, we had temps in the 20's in August. Actually we expect it and deal with it.
Feel for you guys that couldn't cover them all

Eddy I agree,, you do have to "deal" with it,,

Chris it was 27F here and yes we burned some midnight oil, some propane, and some KWH's,,

Dick,, Clarence is a competitor, grew a WI state record of 1049 in '02 (pretty huge fruit at the time) he's been around 10 years and does know "who" you are.

He had his best year ever going in the patch until yesterday, pretty hard to find any humor or "lol" in that when the plants all drop from a hit from "mother" and 3 weeks until the weighoffs. He ran his overheads as you seem to have suggested, it doesn't work at the temps we saw last night, once they ice you're done. He's a family man with a heavy work schedule and basically didn't have the time to build the necessary structures that would have saved him. He'll be back helping growers and making decisions where to take the fruit he has. Watch for the results then you might understand the frustration.

not really concerned with his flustration or yours either for that matter dan. i took offence to his remark and replied accordingly. no big deal either way

no one has experienced any more late season failures that we have here in greene rhode island.

we just choose to deal with it and move on. we dont need to tell anyone what we might have done. better to wait until you actually do it

no hard feeling on my part just standing up for myself

wow, i am with you dan......well put......one puts all that time and effort into getting the most out of the fruit......then bam......mother nature can show it's ugly side........most of us don't have the luxury of growing many plants and growing the top seeds.........so we try to beat out mother nature.......if the battle is lost, at least one could say that the battle was fought with everything one could do under the circumtances

If all you guys lived in Colorado on the list that are complaining then you would really have something to complain about if you tried growing here at high elevation. I bet all of us seasoned growers here could be turning in records at lower elevations. Well I hope to see a couple of good ones come out of Colorado this season With stunning results, They are not mine though, and I am not whining, as it may not be my year, but maybe the next one will be, and the hobby is all about fun, as it is supposed to be. Growing at over 6000 Ft. Elevation can be a pain in the rear. Just remember there is always someone out there that will have worse conditions than what you think you have, depending on the year. Happy growing all, and let's have fun weighing them.....JK
