You should see his fruit from the 500 Northrup called Pancake. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=74222
Steve had some beauties last year too. I am growing orange also this year and have started enjoying the pure beauty of red/orange fruits. The little flecks of yellow some call stars. The blemish free stem area. The lack of canteloping. Etc.
The GPC's views to honor these fruits with each site awarding a "Howard Dill" award to pretty fruits is awesome. Best of luck to all orange growers.
Last year we started a post on most beautiful orange fruits and several dozen came up. If you have a nice orange fruit you have seen in the diaries, copy and paste them in here for all to browse..

The seed that grew my pumpkin is the 423 Gerhardt which is Orangenecks cross of a 669 Muller X 603 Muller. I have seen 4-5 pumpkins from his seed and they are all producing the same dark color. My plant was small only like 300sqft.

Brooks, That's "Zone" on the 981 Zunino (x 500 Northrup). Stephen & Julie pollinated it "for color" LOL. Our prettiest pumpkin was pollinated by kids. God Bless them. It's a real close cross. I was there but didn't touch a thing. All I did was watch & check their work. (I'm soooo proud)
We won't get anywhere near a thousand this year. We didn't get them in the ground until 5/20.
The seeds are:
1370 Rose x 981 Zunino “Knobby”........Thanks Jerry!
500 Northrup x 981 Zunino “Pancake”....Thank you Danny Dill!
981 Zunino x 500 Northrup “Zone”.......Thanks to Vince Zunino & eBay!
You read that right. I bought the 981 off Vince via eBay. Some folks might remember that jerk on eBay selling bogus seeds with Bruce Whittier's picture? Vince posted REAL seeds in rebuttal & some of us supported his effort by bidding on & buying the seeds. LOL
