Water (John)

When transplanting my plants last year I set them in the ground with about one inch of stem between the surface of the hill and the first leaves. Is one inch too much or too little. (Hope you guy's understand what I am saying)

Thanks for any Info on this subject John = Water

I always fill right up to the starter leaves. If you dont have the book How To Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins volume 2 I would buy it and read it. This book tells you almost all you need to know.

i don't like to plant things to deep i plant transplants except tomatoes at the soil level of the pot they come out of after the vine starts running i bury the vines between each leaf axil to help set the tap roots

Hi Water, I agree with Randy it is best to transplant your seedling at the level of the soil of the pot maybe a inch or so above grade. Also I always try to water my transplants at the root level with undergroung drip emitters this causes the new plant to become root oriented. I also at this stage "cheat" and hang a 2'x4' flourescent shop lite a few inches above the seedling (in my green houses). Best of luck in 2001 G. Gadberry

I transplated mine where they had about an inch to two inches from the first leaves. It seemed to work just fine...i grew a 762 lber! Somtimes the stems get really lengthy....i would really suggest if the stem is really lengthy to transplant it to about 2 inches from the cotyledons...or first leaves........and i think it makes the stem stonger that way...and helps fight off the wind a bit...a seedling with a lengthy stem and be blown around quite easily...even when you lift up the plastic from your cold frame to water or something......anyway, that is my opinion.
