Hoping that a few heavy hitters from previous posts will chime in on this question.
I've got a late set (end of July) that is going great now and most secondaries before and after the fruit (except the main) are terminated and buried.
I needed to clear away 1 secondary on each side of the vine before the fruit as they were getting in the way and would have given vine stress issues once they were grown over by the pumpkin.
Finally, the question is, I have 2 secondaries before the fruit that I have not yet terminated that can fill in about another 10' of patch soil before they need to be terminated....should I just let them grow to replace the vines and leaves that I needed to terminate or should they be ended now to pump all energy into the sink??
I'm under the impression that the more energy from leaves and vines before the fruit...the better...is that the case here??
Thanks/Glenn aka North Shore Boyz

glen its late to take away from the pumpkins growth by letting more side vine before the fruit grow. id roll the dice and terminate the sides letting the fruit get all the energy. pap

For what it's worth, because we continue to grow through Oct. we leave a couple of vines growing. We continue to let the main vine grow and 1 or 2 secondaries before the pumpkin. We know that many on the Eastern side of the US get the fast growth and slow down considerably in Sept. We grow slow and steady through out the season until frost in late Oct. Sherry

Sherry in Georgia even though we have to grow in very hot conditions if our leaves and vines are still healthy we also dont get frost until about Oct 15. This year im letting some good ones grow even though they wont be officialy weighed they still get to pack on a few pounds. So we also let some vines grow.
