Question I have, is how do I meassure sunflowers correctly?

Do I just measure straight from one end to the other end, But what if its shaped like a salad bowl?

Do I meassure from one end to the other following the seed path, to the other end.

Any Advice you can give me will greatly help me in my quest for meassuring the sunflower correctly. Also I value your advice.
