Does any body have a cure for the pumpkin blues?

I've just been kind of depressed lately because of my choice to not grow this year. All my wonderful friends have big ones growing. I've got a hole in my life were pumpkins should be. I was hoping to get a job and collage plans organized so i decided not to grow this year. Unfortunatly Ididn't get the job. So now i feel that I should have grown this year. Any body else got the blues from splits, rot, or disease in the patch. And is there a cure.

Hi Alex,
In a little over a month, the major weighoffs take place. Even if I wasn't growing, I'd look forward to the results. If you're not a member of the AGGC, maybe you want to consider joining. It's fun to see the new pumpkins entered into the database(I really like seeing the pumpkin pics). You could plan the seeds you want to grow next year(if you plan on growing). You could work on preparing your patch.
Maybe you can attend a weighoff or two this fall. Hopefully others will have more ideas for you.

Hi Alex,
As Doug stated, about time for everyone to "ante up". Lol..So far, just reading some of the diaries has been a blast..some of the close to getting theres', the splits, heartaches, but thru it all, we all still love pumpkins..myself, spent countless hours researching possible crosses that i wanted, fantastic germination period and then the heartache..i started 2nd job..14-16 hours aday = not much for pumpkins..anyhow, regrettably way behind but still growing and believe or not ahead of pb..all in all goood year so far...hope it brings cheer..grow 'em big NEXT year..Joe

If you are young enough that you are thinking about college, you have plenty of time ahead of you for pumpkin growing. You just have to have a little faith that your time will come. Even when you reach my age and send your first child off to college (and I was 34 when she was born), you can't let things get you down. This afternoon I plan to go to my patch and soak it down with Roundup. No pumpkin this year, but I'm not letting it get me down. I learned a lot and plan to be back better than ever next year.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I know i will be at the austin weigh-off this year but I might consider going to nekosa, or one of the iowa weigh-offs. I'm already planning next year too.

The Anamosa Pumpkinfest is always the first Saturday of October, if you plan on coming. It is a good chance to meet some real good grower. You might even get to talk to some wannabees like ME!
